I have both lenses for use on a D800 and D800E.
The 24-120 VR serves as a great all-purpose walking around lens and the 24-70 when I want stellar, tripod, M-up quality.
Michael Reischmann's review of the 24-120 on Luminous Landscape (under his review of the D800) sold me on trying it. And, having tried it, I liked it very much.
