With my D700 and D800 I shoot as far to the right as possible with the histogram just barely touching the right side and a few blinkies. Perhaps I am giving up some shadow detail but I would much rather have no blown out areas and some dark shadows than blown highlights which I generally find distracting.
It certainly depends on the image but with a white bird like a puffin I hate any blown out areas since feather detail on the chest or head is what makes the shot IMHO.
