Am I in the minority when it comes to the newer FF DSLR's?

I envy many of you because it’s obvious that your photographic skills are at such high levels that any incremental improvements provided in the newer camera bodies (especially Nikon) will have profound impact on your photography.   I am especially impressed by those of you who can assess and critique the newer FF bodies without ever having owned any of the existing FF bodies to begin with.  For me, I cannot get upset at the 6D or any of the recent equipment announcements.  Any of the newer offerings from either Canon or Nikon will not create any meaningful difference to my photography.  I will continue to shoot with my older technology 7D and 5DMKII and the majority of flaws in my photos will be due to my lack of experience, technique or knowledge.   When I review my photos - lighting and composition are some of the areas that jump out to me – not resolution or DR.

Will I eventually purchase a new body?  Absolutely!   I enjoy buying new technology and the latest gadgets and can comfortably afford spending the money.  But the reality is that my current camera equipment can more than support almost all of my photographic needs and a body or lens upgrade are a luxury and a “fun to have” or a “nice to have”.   I do not view an upgrade to a newer body as a photographic life and death decision where I am compelled to change to another brand because their current offering on paper has superior technical merit which may or may not be realized in real world images.

Maybe someday I will have the same equipment demands that many of you now have.  Maybe someday I will need a camera with the DR capable of underexposing a shot by 4 or 5 stops and then pulling it up in PP so that it looks like it was exposed correctly.  Maybe someday I will need the extra MP’s to enlarge photos up to wall sized images but still resolve enough detail that I can pick out a pine needle in a forest.  Maybe someday I will build up my skills to a point where I don’t need any additional practice and I will have the disposable time to spend on these forums and complain about equipment, sensor design and companies.  After all, this is really what photography is all about.

Finally, I too am worried about Canon going out of business in the near future - many of you not only have mastered photography but you have insight into Canon’s sales, market share, profitability, R&D, etc .  It’s very comforting to know that so many on these forums can provide strategic guidance to a multi-billion dollar company that has no idea what it is doing.   Just go buy Sony sensors and stick them in DSLR bodies – absolutely brilliant!  It’s a wonder that many of you are not already CEO’s of your own company.

There are many talented photographers on this forum and I greatly respect your work and the positive messages that you bring.  I understand that this is an equipment forum and there will be a large presence of amateur engineers and pseudo-DSLR experts but it would be great to see more photographers as well.

Happy Shooting!
