Yes, the 300 mm might be the way to go but I sure wish it had VR. Still it is the lightest and one of the least expensive options. The good thing about the 70-200 is that I could also use it for other types of photography. Thanks for your information.

VR is a nice addition but hardly a necessity and the 300 f/4 is the cheapest, lightest solution (get a better tripod collar for it if you go that route). The 70-200 with a pair of TCs (1.4 and say 2) would also be pretty light and small but expensive.....
