I have 50/2, but use it with 5D2 and the dedicated MF focusing screen.
If you have the default/built-in focusing screen and preview DOF with a fast lens at 4-2.8-2-1.4, you will see a change from 4 to 2.8, but the screen won't show much difference when you open the lens further to 2 and 1.4. It will all look like f/2.8. The MF focusing screen does not do that, previews DOF of fast lenses more correctly and also makes focusing of fast lenses more precise.
I would not worry much about it if you are looking for the Makro-Planar. The preview on the f/2 lens will be ok and for the critical focus you will want to use live view anyways. If you want the 50/1.4, the focusing may be more tricky and I would suggest renting or trying the lens before you buy.
Again, I have 5D2. I know about people who used 5D2 with dedicated focusing screen and moved to 5D3 and say the focusing is even easier.
Thanks again for the great input! I am leaning towards staying away from the Zeiss.
