I also purchased a film SLR for the fun of it. I went the ultra-cheap route. The Nikon EM Series is dirt cheap. The body is the smallest SLR ever made by Nikon, and respectable Series E lenses are very cheap used bargains as well. I purchased a mint condition Nikon EM for $50, including the 50mm F1.8 kit lens. I purchased a used Canon CanoScan 8600F to scan my film for $35.00. Altogether, for less than $100 I have a good-looking, very compact, lightweight system that is a joy to use.
I shot these photos with my Nikon EM using Kodak UltraMax 400 film (C-41 processing, typically sold in pharmacies and discount stores), and scanned the negatives with the CanoScan 8600F.
