If you want to feel at home as possible and use all features of modern Nikon FX lenses with the current ergonomic paradigm, the cameras are the F6, F5, F100, N80, N75, maybe N65.

This means the same knob/exposure menu on top, dials, pad, does AFS, VR.

The N90 is nice but is a little different in ergonomics.  The F4 is a pretty cool looking boat anchor but won't do VR.  The N70 has goofy dials.  The N60 is limited.  The N50 is really weird in ergonomics.

To get the older MF cameras with full functionality you will need AFD lenses, or older AFS lenses with the aperture dial.

So I would stick with one of the 5 or 6 above.
