Where have you heard this information?
Somebody made a post recently stating that Nikon had the patents to a few more upcoming lenses and a 300mm f/4 was amongst them. An exploded view of the lens was included in the link. It was even shorter than the current AF-S version. I don't have the thread at this time. Maybe someone can chime in.
