The painterly rendition issue is, I would say...

80% user error

20% a problem with the interpolation algorithms.

Sharpening in lightroom makes things an order of magnitude worse.  I always did two rounds of sharpening (one in cap one, then USM in photoshop) but until the algorithm improves I am only using USM.

What I am saying is that avoiding the painterly problem is possible on any image, but it may loom over you more or less depending on the subject matter.
