I've owned the 50/1.4D, 50/1.4G, 50/1.8D, and 50/1.8G.  Also the Sigma 50/1.4.

Bokeh at f/2.8 or wider, best first:

  1. Sigma
  2. 50/1.8G
  3. 50/1.4G
  4. 50/1.4D
  5. 50/1.8D (I think it's a distant 5th)
Bokeh at f/4 is a tougher call, as the 50/1.8G shows more polygons and the Sigma starts to show hints  as well.  I think I'd still give the advantage here to the Sigma, but only slightly over the 50/1.4G.  But I don't care about f/4 with a fast 50mm.
Bokeh is a very, very subjective thing.  Things I don't like about the 50/1.4G's bokeh, someone else won't care.   Some people think bokeh is simply the background blur and the smoothness, others think that it's partly or all about highlights that are out of focus.  I consider both background and highlights in my personal ranking.
Good luck with your decision.
