Canon Superzoom Sampler - Birds, Blossoms, and Butterflies
Oct 3, 2012

Hi all,

This time we share another variety of recent shots from our Canon superzooms. In this set I'm including basic camera info, and some notes on each shot. Higher resolution versions can be seen in our gallery:

Northern Cardinal (portrait) SX30 Manual ISO100 840mm 1/160 @75%crop. Shot at sunrise.

Tufted Titmouse (BOAS) SX30 Manual ISO100 840mm 1/160 full-frame @16ft. Shot at sunrise.

Monarch Butterfly SX30 Manual ISO80 840mm 1/640 full-frame. Shot at noon.

Buckeye Butterfly SX30 Manual ISO80 840mm 1/640 @15%crop. Shot at noon.

Eastern Phoebe SX40 Aperture Priority ISO200 840mm 1/400 @50% crop. Shot at sunrise.

Northern Cardinal (portrait) SX40 Av ISO100 450mm 1/320 100% crop. Shot in full mid-morning sun.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird (BOAS) SX40 Av ISO100 840mm 1/500 @20% crop. Shot in full mid-morning sun.

Sunflower S5-IS Manual ISO100 36mm 1/400 full-frame. Shot in mid-morning overcast.

Hummingbird/Salvia Blossoms S5-IS Manual ISO100 432mm 1/1250 @50% crop. Shot in full rising sun.

Eastern Bluebird SX30 Manual ISO100 840+2X digital TC [1680mm] 1/60.

I include this last one to note the reduced feather detail and overall soft IQ which digital zoom often produces, especially with slow shutters. We seldom use such in-camera magnification and don't generally recommend its use, but it has proved useful in some situations. This shot was taken at @40ft in poor light, but it was a keeper for us because it was our first image of this young fledgling which shows his remarkable two pearl-colored claws.

We hope you enjoy these, and good shooting everybody.
