I personally would not feel comfortable with my camera in a backpack in Italy. I prefer a bag I can keep my eyes on at all times and something I can wrap my arms around in crowds.
I would also try to find a wider lens if I were you.
So in terms of the bag I am guessing you are suggesting a single over the shoulder bag that sits at your hip so you can always see it and grab on to it when you are in crowds?
For wider lenses my widest is 18-300mm at 76 degrees, what would you think about the 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED at 109 degrees or the 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR at 83 degrees.
I am leaning towards the 10-24mm because that would be the biggest jump from what I currently have.
