Yes, definitely. That was the reason not to use it too much during game drives. Also changing the lenses during very dusty rides is not recommended because of the exposed sensor.
I kept the same lens all the time. My main gear was D800+200-400/4 and secondary was D300+24-70/2.8. This was my backup-of-the-backup but it served very nicely during the village visits and e.g. during Hell's Gate hike.
Definitely recommended.
