Sad. The Nikon 1, even offered a few years earlier in direct competition with 4/3rd, would likely have had a short life before competitions picked up.

Look what we have now since Nikon 1 was available. We have the Sony RX100, Fuji X-E1, XF-1, Canon S110, Panasonic LX7, Olympus XZ-2, all more of less offering what Nikon 1 could offer (and maybe a bit more in some areas).

Just very objectively, if one came from Mars just now and is offered the above models, would one pick Nikon 1 over others (considering price and features). The fact is plain and simple, Nikon 1 quickly lost its edge to stand out. V1 is particularly too big to carry around, with a lens not fast enough. Yes, V1 (and J1) can produce great images (so do the competition).

I recall a video touring the Nikon 1 China plant, which really showed how the Nikon 1 body and lenses are mass produced. The dramatic price drop, I believe, is mostly due to the stock-up of inventory (after the initial enthuaism died down). Nikon needs to learn from the handlers of Justin Bieber on how to "sell" a product that doesn't really have intrinsic advantage over the competition after the initial hype.
