D800(E), 24-70 @24mm outer AF?
Oct 2, 2012

I'm wondering if anyone has a D800/D800E and 24-70mm with accurate focusing on the left/right AF points @ 24mm?

I'm on my 2nd D800E, and both of them have had pretty noticeable backfocus on the left/right AF points with the 24-70mm at 24mm (and to some extent 35mm). However, I'm not sure if this is the well-known D800 "Left AF" problem, since it seems equally bad for both the 24mm and 35mm. (At 50-70mm I don't see a problem). The lens can produce a much sharper image/focus with Live View, and seems like a well-centered copy.

Now I'm trying to figure out if this is just normal behavior for this camera and/or lens. For example, Nikon's 14-24mm is a lens that I've tested to always backfocus on the far left/right AF sensors @ 14mm (after using multiple copies) - it happened with my D700 body, and still does this on my D800E.

Any input or tips appreciated, thanks.
