Gross incompetence by Canon repair - is this normal?

That is a really big bummer... I would call somebody at the NJ facility and ask for a service manger or something of the sort and explain all you have been through and what a mess it has been. I would also contact Canon corporate if possible and see if you can get through with them somehow and explain your issue with both service facilities.

Hope you can resolve it all and end up happy. I would demand they replace the top LCD cover and replace the stripped screws for starters, then tell them to fix the viewfinder issue.

With my 70-200 focus ring issue, I had the lens sent directly to some lady who looked into the issue for me directly. Maybe ask that the camera be sent to somebody who can supervise the entire repair and make sure it does not leave there until perfect.
