Panasonic GX1 + 14mm or compact?
7 months ago

Hi all

I'm currently looking for a smaller camera as a back-up to my Nikon D700. I find that I'm often engaging in "adventurous" situations (muti-day hikes, mountain bike rides etc) where taking the D700 cannot even be considered. I'd like a decent smaller alternative with RAW and a wide-angle lens - landscapes are my prime interest in these situations.

I started out looking at the Canon S100 because it is so compact, but I don't know if I can get past the image quality (which is good for its class, but poor coming from the D700). Recent arrivals like the Fujifilm XF1 are in the same category. The Sony RX100 is so pricey its made me consider interchangeable lens cameras with even bigger sensors.

I'm interested in your thoughts on the Panasonic GX-1 and 14mm pancake combo because of its combination of image quality and price.

My concerns are:

  • it may be a little too large for what I'm looking for;

  • I don't know if the 28mm equiv lens will be wide enough (I do most of my landscapes on the 18-35mm full frame);

  • I'd be paying for the interchangeable lens feature without really using it; and

  • there appears to be no "kit" option with this lens, making it a tad expensive

Thoughts?

E
