Also, I don't think the critical focus is about pixel-peeping or ignoring the overall quality of the image.

A lot of photos simply come out soft. It's almost impossible to get 100% keepers in the real world. Better to take a shot that is repeatable, check critical focus, re-shoot if necessary -- than going home and realize the shot is visibly soft even for web display.

It's also not for newbies either. At a Chase Jarvis shoot, he was shooting tethered to some huge Mac displays. After every shot, he'd look over at the screen while his assistant would use a loupe zoom to check critical focus at important points.

While I'm not shooting pro or for giant prints, the check in the LCD is the poor man's way of not having assistants come along!
