*ZS20 (TZ30) vs. ZS3 (TZ7) and the winner is...*
Sep 30, 2012

Thought I'd post this for anyone looking to upgrade from their beloved ZS3.

I still have mine, but wont really need to use it anymore.

ZS20 has taken it's place, and has raised the standard.

It's now easier than ever to get great shots, in varying conditions.

Model DMC-ZS20
Flash Used No
Focal Length 68.9 mm
Exposure Time 1/159 sec
Aperture f/6.3
ISO Equivalent 100
Exposure Bias -1/3

One of the benefits of the ZS20 is the newer lens ranging from 24mm wide angle, to 480mm tele photo !

All in a camera that is slimmer than the ZS3.
(Kinda looks better too, IMHO).

Model DMC-ZS20
Flash Used No
Focal Length 7.9 mm
Exposure Time 1/400 sec
Aperture f/4.1
ISO Equivalent 100
Exposure Bias -1/3

Moving up from base iso, the ZS20 seems to hold onto detail better.

Good thing, cause as you zoom in closer to 480mm the lens gets slower and slower

ISO 400 @ 480mm

Model DMC-ZS20
Flash Used No
Focal Length 86 mm
Exposure Time 1/77 sec
Aperture f/6.4
ISO Equivalent 400
Exposure Bias -1

This next shot shows the improved detail retention at higher iso settings, as well as the improved O.I.S. :

IS0 800 409mm 1/5th shutter speed

Model DMC-ZS20
Flash Used No
Focal Length 73.1 mm
Exposure Time 1/5 sec
Aperture f/6
ISO Equivalent 800
Exposure Bias -1/3
White Balance
Metering Mode

Colors take a dive at iso 800 on the ZS3 (TZ7), but saturation levels are maintained very well on the ZS20.

For such a small sensored camera, iso 1600 shouldn't look this good, IMHO.

Model DMC-ZS20
Flash Used No
Focal Length 33.3 mm
Exposure Time 1/15 sec
Aperture f/5.5
ISO Equivalent 1600
Exposure Bias

Color saturation is much improved at higher iso settings.

The Tele Macro Feature is really good, allowing you some distance between your subject, while still filling a lot of the frame with the subject.

Tele Macro 1

Model DMC-ZS20
Flash Used No
Focal Length 77.4 mm
Exposure Time 1/125 sec
Aperture f/6.2
ISO Equivalent 100
Exposure Bias -.66
White Balance

Tele Macro 2

Model DMC-ZS20
Flash Used No
Focal Length 86 mm
Exposure Time 1/833 sec
Aperture f/6.4
ISO Equivalent 100
Exposure Bias -1

Tele Macro 3

Model DMC-ZS20
Flash Used No
Focal Length 86 mm
Exposure Time 1/125 sec
Aperture f/6.4
ISO Equivalent 100
Exposure Bias -1

Even shooting the Moon seems easier, as my ZS3 (and TZ3 and TZ5) all had trouble focusing on the moon.

Last but not least (well, maybe it it least important even the Digital zoom isn't totally useless:

What I like better on ZS20:

Faster AF

Faster burst rate up to 5.5fps with AF, or 12 fps without , both at full resolution.
LCD seems a bit better...not sure why.

Better ergonomics.Shutter is in better position than ZS3.
Custom settings on mode dial.
Better Tele Macro feature.

Also has much better Video, for those who care.

Hope this helps
