Nuts & Bolts Question: Stuck Filter Adapter

I bought a used camera (Canon PowerShot Pro1) on ebay. It works fine. However, it came with a filter adapter (FA-DC58A) that has a 58mm UV filter attached it. I cannot remove the UV filter from the filter adapter. Whoever owned the camera previously must have screwed it on too tightly, or mis-threaded it. I don't know. Brute force is getting me nowhere! I also tried running soapy hot water over it. The two pieces won't budge! Any craggly old veterans out there have a tip for loosening them up?
