I bought one brand new some years ago to hang on an FM-3a, and used it in the manual mode. I've since used it on my D90 and my D700. I've only seen flare in a few situations where I should have known better and avoided, and I've used it for portraits as well. I think it's a pretty good lens, doesn't wear you down and gives good image quality.
The photo below was taken with the 35-70 on a D700.
