X100: how to take this picture

I've been trying for several days to take some pictures in a historic blacksmith shop that has many windows. And it has been sunny, so light levels have been very difficult. The deep shadows are totally swamped by strong sunlight. I've tried various settings, one shown below, including the X100 flash (which appears to be way to weak to help here).
I'll try again today but things are more favorable as it is cloudy. But if the sun does come out do you have any suggestions as how to take this image with a X100?
