Chrome is not your problem. When you update any software look out for sneaky add ons hidden in the dialog boxes as you update. I suspect you have allowed AVG to take over as your search engine. Go to the far right of the upper toolbar in Chrome and click on the "Customize and manage Google Chrome" icon. Next click the "Settings" button. Then click on "Manage Search Engines" button and reset Google as your search engine.
Should solve your problem.
