Equipment recommendations for indoor macro shots...

After some research and talks with my fellow photography club members, I have yet to select equipment for this purpose: Indoor macro shots of flowers, leaves, still life, etc. in a dimly lit room with little ambient and outdoor light. Can anyone recommend a continuous lighting setup for this purpose...I'd rather not use my Nikon SB700 flash unless required. Specific equipment manufacturers and models are requested. My budget is about $500 US. Thank you.
