I've just been there. I bought the 16-50 f2.8 with my A65 as my first lens and was willing to buy an 'inexpensive' prime (so no 85mm f1.4 ).

Had a hard time choosing between (arguments are only my point of view):

  • 35mm f1.8 : THE lens to carry if you just want to travel ligh, and be able to shoot any subject in almost any light condition

  • 50 mm f1.8 : great lens for wide-medium portrait

  • 85mm f2.8 : small telephoto (127mm eq 35mm), great for close portrait or to take a bit of distance.

As the 16-50mm already covers the 35mm and the 50mm, I thought I would better benefit from the 85mm for a first additional lens as preference goes to shooting portraits. And I love this lens.

But I will also surely buy the 35mm in the next 6 months, just prioritized the 85mm.
