Pretty much, the benefit of 24 Mpixel is you can use just the center of the frame. But as stated earlier as well, you never have enough zoom. When I bought the 70-400 bazooka I still ended up having to get close enough to birds to scare them away when not careful
The trick I found that works best is to point at larger animals (Although you may want to use that extra distance to move back... :D)
