I would download the free edition of Photomatix and see if you get better, worse, or similar results with the method I suggested. Another thing to consider is the time and effort you're putting into this stacking procedure - is it automated, or are you creating layers?
There were some threads a few years back where people used PhotoAcute to stack images in the exact same manner you're doing, perhaps give that software a try as well.
If it were me, I'd choose the quickest way possible to generate an image I was satisfied with, and for the scope I would be using that image.
The software I'm using, RegiStax, is geared specifically towards image stacking (it seems to be geared towards use in astronomy). It's a little quirky, but it works in two or three simple steps (less, if I use a tripod or other means to keep the camera fixed, so no image realignment is needed). The stacking takes about 20 seconds on my older PC for 7 10MP images.
I'm going to give Photomatix a try, to see what it brings to the table. Thanks again for the recommendation.
