I own both brands and this is my personal opinion.

I like the out of camera settings from the Canons a little bit better. If I would shoot jpg I would care. With raw I just dial in my preferences and I can make any difference disapppear.

In my Nikon pic there is often a blue sky where there is white/grey on the Canon pic. That has to do with the larger DR the Nikons offer. It enables you to expose a bit more to the left (iow darker) while retaining good shadows. This is only seen in certain high contrast situations.

I think differnces between todays bodies are quite small… as a DPreview member I've read thousands of hours about the -often miniscule- differences and I must confess it has cost me a ton of money. As a pro that's not a big problem but for the casual user I would advise them to not get fooled into believing the hype. All modern day dslr's are good enough … Just look at the gorgeous pics they shot 5 years ago...
