We've had some bad experiences with restoring computers via TM so never use it nowadays. We always use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) which is brilliant.
As for backing up, I dont understand why people who have Mac Pro's and lots of free discs manually backup via the Vault. Much easier to put the discs into a RAID 1 configuration so it's a real time backup solution otherwise it's too easy to fall into the trap of doing some work and not hitting the Vault (which stops you from working in Aperture). A few hours/days or a week goes by and you then risk losing work should drive failure occur.
