There is a simple explanation;

We all start with the hope to stay in budget, but since we now little we make the wrong 'must have' choices at the beginning.

So we start with somewhat crappy gear (There are only a handfull of people who start photography with something like a medium format or dslr and prime lenses.)

Next we feel challenged to capture difficult moments wild life, parties, sports. Not that we ever would make a living with such. We still have to discover our photo priorities.

At that point we have to watch out for buying gear that hardly justifies itself.

New gear most times introduces other must have items. Some of us get stuck in a loop of getting new gear, learning the gear by creating failing photos and selling of the gear, instead of stick to your camera and make it an extension of your hands.
