The time has come: lens consolidation time
8 months ago

Greetings everyone.

Just recently, I've come to a crossroads on my way to building out a venerable collection of lenses that make sense for me.

I just sold my trusted Olympus 14-150, and am (for now) a primes-only camper (or 'zoom-less', which reflects more how I feel). Anyway, with my OMD, I'm packing the 14mm 2.5, 25mm 1.4, and the 45mm 1.8. All three are excellent, I love them to bits, and I swoon every time I slap each of them on (the 14mm primarily because of how tiny it is).

But to be completely honest with myself, I know that it's only a matter of time until I get a hold of another, faster zoom lens. The practicality and versatility of having one is what I'm after, but was growing tired of how "ho-hum" and slow the 14-150 was. I thought about going the primes-only path, and to supplement my telephoto needs with the 75mm, but I'm afraid (and almost certain) that I'd be left with a gaping inability to zoom with my lens, when I couldn't do so with my feet, whether it be further away, or closer to the action.

That said: the obvious front runner in my books was the 12-35, since it was fast enough for me, and had the ever-so-practical range of 24-70 equiv. It's whopping price tag was what has kept be at bay. And now, since it's been made official, the 35-100 has become the object of my desire (it also covers a range which I'm definitely lacking). I shoot mainly family events, my toddler, and have recently started doing product and studio portraiture.
So... some open questions.

1) Has the recent price drop on the 12-35 made anyone rethink their decision to not purchase this lens, strictly based on price?

2) Does anyone have experience in using a 70-200mm FL as a walk around lens, for family outings, indoor functions, etc? Since the 35-100 isn't too massive (compared to a Canikon 70-200, I can totally see myself using it as one)

That is all. GAS is a B!%@#.
