Yes, whether you compose using the viewfinder or LiveView/LCD, you'll still have the lightleak issue because everything is exactly the same when the actual shot is taken.

This is all livable to me now that I know its behavior and what I need to do.

But I admit that I'm spoiled by my mirrorless camera (Oly E-M5) that obviously doesn't have this issue and I also miss my old D2X and its built-in viewfinder cover (although I wasn't into time exposure back then). Guess that's one random advantage of the D800 over the D600--having to put that little cover on the viewfinder is a bit of a pain and I know I'm going to drop and lose it sometime soon.
