G1X + 250D & 500D Closeup Filters STACKED (PICS)
Sep 26, 2012

People still ask me if I've done any more photography with both of the closeup lenses stacked together and up until now, i just haven't really needed to photograph anything with two closeup filters on the same lens. My first thought was that there would be too much glass in the way and that the results would contain optical aberrations or corner softness etc... but no, the glass Canon uses on their closeup lenses is exceptional. I already owned a 500D closeup lens but when I obtained the 250D (which has stronger magnification), I tested the two together and then put away the 500D because it didn't seem to have as much impact as the 250D.

I had a chance to use the two together last night and this afternoon and the results were very encouraging. I stack the 500D on the bottom towards the camera lens because it is not as curved as the 250D lens is on the outer surface. I didn't want to risk the 250D being ground into the back of the 500D just in case the tolerance was not enough so the 250D goes on the very end. I'm pretty sure Canon didn't envision people stacking these things.

They are fairly easy to use together but the "focus window" is incredibly narrow. On my desktop I can slide the camera back and forth towards the subject and you can further fine-tune the focus by using 'MANUAL FOCUS' which triggers an enlarged window on the LCD and I use that to determine where the focus is on the subject. Hard to use this method with a breeze in the garden.
