Considering selling 7D and lenses to go D600 for 50/50 Video Projects/Event Stills?
Sep 26, 2012

Hey all,

I shoot a lot of short video projects, from studio commercials & product demos, to fun outdoor events. In addition, I shoot stills of people at events, from relatively tame concerts to large conferences.

I've been shooting with the 7D and a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX OS (and nifty fifty of course) and saving my pennies. The original idea was save up for:

Used 5D MkII ($1500)
+ 16-35L ($1500)
+ 24-70L 2.8 (v1) ($1600)
+ 70-200L 2.8 ($1200)
= $5800, all used.

Then my next level-up will be to sell that and buy
Used 5D MkIII ($3000)
+ 24-70L v2 ($2200)
+ 70-200L IS v2 ($2100)
+ primes
= $7300 + primes.

That being said, the D600 comes out with dramatically better dynamic range, color depth, and supposedly better low-light performance, with uncompressed HDMI out for video, and for the rare occasion when I want it, built-in flash. The biggest bummer on the D600 to me is that it's not better sealed against the elements, but I have yet to be in a situation where that's necessary. I'm sure the lack of aperture control while in LV will be annoying as well.

So, rather than going 5D MkII with those lenses, here's my thought:

Nikon D600 ($2100)
+ 14-24 Nikkor Used ($1700)
+ 24-70 Tamron VC ($1300)
+ Sigma 70-200 OS ($1300) = $6400

I don't need the 70-200mm right away, just the walk-around range of the 24-70, and the wide angle 14-24mm for events and some of the video shoots, so the telezoom will come later.

Thoughts? Advice? Is there anything I'm not thinking about for video in moving from Canon to Nikon?
