I know a someone that works in a major manufacturers repair facility, and he told me that cameras that are not repairable, are stripped down to salvage their parts and he's often heard phrases like "Save that sensor, they cost us $15.00 each to replace" and this is referring to APS-C sized camera sensors. He also strips down "point & shoot" cameras and the sensors are apparently part of the lens, so if the lens is saved, the sensor is too. But if the lens is scrapped, so is it's sensor, they're not worth the time to separate the sensor from the damaged lens. By the way, the hardware from the point & shoot cameras is worth saving, each part is put into it's bin and these parts of LKQ (like, kind & quality) are used for cameras that are repaired. In other words, send a camera in for repair under warranty and the parts that are used are new, used or what is available at the time.
