Mountain Greece - D5100
Sep 25, 2012

We normally associate Greece with its stunning sun-drenched, whitewashed islands, the incredibly blue Mediterranean, and the ancient monuments of Western Civilization.

But, there is another Greece, away from the sea: Its mountains, which rise to great heights and offer their own grandeur and beauty. Here are some photos (Nikon D5100 and 16-85mm VR Zoom) of the Greek mountain beauty.

Below: Tucked away below the towering mountains of Pindos, the traditional slate-roofed hut.

Below: Groups of mountain villages, each a few kilometers from each other, cling to the hillsides, at elevation 1000ft (300 meters).

Below: Several stone bridges, over a century old, spanning dry washes.

Below: Strange stone formations, known as the Stone-forrest. One of many, many such formations, as dense as the normal forrest surrounding them.

Below: Great modern hotels, in the local style of Architecture.

Below: Old Churches and Monasteries abound. Sometimes to reach them requires a bit of a climb.

Below: For the record, Guiness refers to Vikos gorge as the deepest in the world -

900 m deep x 1100 m wide (2950x3600 ft.) While there, a 45 yr old man, part of a mountaineer club, fell to his death.

Below: A legendary bridge, on the lowlands below: Arta. The master-builder killed and entombed his wife into the bridge during its construction, and the bridge kept falling down, until he confessed the deed, and after she was removed etc. the bridge was completed. (Covering up construction errors and defects by legends...!)

Hope you enjoyed the tour, comments welcome
