Do you think its possible with practice and playing with the settings to get the best out of this camera, without the need to PP?

You will get perfectly good shots out of camera.

You also get a lot out of this camera by shooting in JPEG because many of the features are JPEG only, such as clear zoom or twilight mode - because he camera is processing to get these features.

The camera does not (surprisingly) offer an 'in camera' editing function for cropping etc, so that kind of stuff will always have to be done as PP, although even the basic photo kiosks on the high street offer such features now.

The RX100 is a pretty good catch all solution, you can be as 'manual' or 'auto' as you want or need.
