Hi, I have a fundamental Lightroom question. When I import the RAW format photo to Lightroom, Adobe applies the Adobe profile to the RAW photo.

Actually Lightroom applies the camera profile that is set as the default in Lightroom's Camera Calibration panel (Develop Module). I'm not sure what you mean by "Adobe profile" since Lightroom ships with multiple profiles for cameras made by the major manufacturers.

I would like to be able to apply the Canon Standard Picture Style as a default when I import the photo so I will have something which looks like the Canon JPEG as a starting point.

I'm also not sure what you mean here. Are you referring to the Camera Standard profile that is a part of the profiles created by Adobe?

If not, you cannot use CANON's Standard Picture Style in Adobe software although you can tweak Lightroom's settings to get a close approximation. The reason is because the camera profiles from Adobe only address how colors are rendered and Picture Styles involve settings to contrast, sharpness, saturation and color tone that are not influenced by the selected camera profile.

So to get a result that approximates a straight out of the camera JPEG, first go to the Camera Calibration tab and select a Camera Matching profile that you think gives your raw file the best starting point. Then you'd have to adjust the Contrast, Sharpening, Saturation, and Tone Curve until you get a result that looks like a JPEG.

What I found is I want to start with some level of noise reduction and sharpening. For photos I want further adjustments, I will use the preset as a starting point. Anyway I can do that when I import?

Applying noise reduction and sharpening only will not make a CR2 file look like an out of the camera JPEG so your question isn't internally consistent.

If that's all you want to do, take an unedited CR2 file and add the desired amount of sharpening and noise reduction. Then press and hold the ALT key and you will see the Reset button (Develop Module) change to the Set Default... button. Click on the Set Default... button, then on Update to Current Settings button.

But in my opinion this is overkill for simply adding sharpening and noise reduction; you'd be better off creating a preset with your desired amounts of sharpening and NR and applying it at Import. If you want to modify the default camera profile choice and picture style components, then I'd suggest using the process described above to change the Default settings.

Once you've established your new Default settings you can click on Edit > Preferences from the menu, select the Presets tab, and enable the "Make default specific to camera serial number" option. Of course this assumes that for each camera you're importing into Lightroom, you've set up specific default settings for each.
