okiedokieartichokie,
I own both a D800 $3,000.00
and a 5D MkIII. $3,500.00

The Canon 70-200 IS II cost me around $2,300.00
The Nikon 70-200 vr II cost me around $2,300.00

The Canon 24-105 f4 cost around 1k
The Nikon 24-120 f4 cost around 1.2k

The Nikon 24-70 2.8 cost around $1,800.00
The Canon 24-70 2.8 II cost around $2,200.00

On the 1.8 lens series, the Nikon versions do cost more. Otherwise there isn't

a huge discount buying Canon. Though I will say that the Nikon consumer lenses at least come with a lens hood and a pinch lens cap instead of what I got with my consumer lenses I bought for my 7D.

I like the feel of the 5d MkIII better in my hands, but I love the D800 when it comes to changing autofocus and most other settings. Since I bought the D800, the 5D has been out of the closest only twice in the last two months.

Good luck with your decision.
