Sharp zoom lens??
Perhaps half a dozen years ago I had the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. It was a very nice lens but I found I was taking a significant number of photos in relatively low light where VR would be helpful. So I bought a used Nikon 70-200 VR1 and sold the Sigma.
Today Sigma has a 70-200 with its own version of VR and I wouldn't hesitate to try it.
Bear in mind, though, that when you're shooting children VR doesn't help with motion of the subjects, it only helps with motion of the camera body.
