I'll have to look at the manual focus more critically on the 19 to see if that is the same experience you have. I really think that autofocus hold with the shutter button half way down on what you want in focus with these lenses (and any other autofocus lens for that matter) is the way to go. By using the autofocus hold technique and recomposing you are in effect using the autofocus to manually focus on what you think is important in the image.
