I have both, and in most cases the "straight out of camera" rx100 photos are better than D300. Sony's JPEG processing is optimized to look sharp and punchy without any extra work. I find that rx100 is a perfect replacement for D300 with a kit zoom, used as a "walkabout" camera. But also I shoot RAW with the D300, and find that there is much more latitude in post processing. Obviously, superwide and telephoto lenses will not be replaced by rx100. Another angle is Nikon's excellent flash system: for example, D300 can control a remote SB800 and even adjust its power right from the camera. Bottom line: while I am keeping D300 for the special shots, I no longer feel the need to carry it 'just in case' when photography is not the main goal.
