In summary I shoot 14-bit "visually lossless" because it saves a little space and there is no actual loss of information. I switch to 12-bit if memory space is scarce: there is a little loss of information in the shadows but in practice of very little or no visual impact, and I'd rather get a few extra pictures.

Interesting discussion. Is it correct to say that going from 14 bits to 12 will not affect the dynamic range - however, it might affect the tonal range?
