I have the D800 and the 70-200 and it is a great combo, but it is not a "walking around" lens, it is large and heavy.
I have the 24-70 and love it, but also wish it had VR. Bear in mind that the F2.8 plus the high ISO capabilities of the D800 mean you can shoot faster than you might think otherwise. It also has the great new feature where Auto-iso will automatically use a higher shutter speed limit based on how far you are zoomed. It's also a pretty large and heavy lens but noth as much as the 70-200.
I have both -- that's the best answer. Seriously, if you want the best glass.
But if you are going to get just one lens (other than the prime 50), you might look at the 24-120. It's not as sharp as the 70-200 or 24-70, but it is a better range for walking around, and has VR, and is fairly light. 70mm is a bit long in many situations.
