There's always ebay. I bought my head 2nd hand for about half price, and an L-bracket which was new, but an odd make and far cheaper than all the makes I'd heard of - its something like Maestos. Its an excellent L-bracket, I'd buy another (note that L-brackets are a luxury, not a necessity, though I'd not be without one!).

I look from time to time for a decent set of legs, but so far not found the right ones for the right money. Ebay bidders do have a habit of forcing prices higher than they should be.

General advice on buying a tripod - if you can't afford the right one, then don't bother. A cheap tripod is a total waste of time and money. Also, if you compromise on a tripod and find you do like using it, then you will want a better one.

Make sure it is tall enough to reach your eye-level without using the centre column, ideally higher.

If you buy a light one, then beware windy days, the whole thing will be very top heavy, and a sudden gust can prove very expensive.
