Storing files

I was wondering, do I NEED to keep the RAW file and the edit once clients have approved their sessions and are satisfied? What do you do? Keeping both seems a waste of precious disc space on my backups, so I was considering making a disc copy of the edited session and only keeping RAW files on backup drives... ???
