The dark landscapes of America sound like they're CRYING out for a 14-24. I live in downtown brooklyn and spend much of my camera toting life with my butt backed up against a parked car, trying to get my shot.
Just got a d600 this week, in the same situation as you. I had the 14-24 through a complex series of swaps, put it on this camera, wow! I don't really want a 70-200 so I bought a 105 2.0 to compliment the new 50 (which is much nicer than the old one, btw). Got an adorama demo for around $850.
And a second btw- tried the 28 1.8, thought it would be nice to have something lighter than the 14-24. Nope, that lens doesn't hold a candle the the zoom in my book. Especially for $700.
So, there's my starting kit- 14-24, 50, 105. I doubt I'd want anything longer, but would love to see Nikon upgrade the 35 2.0. Usually, I only take one or two of the lenses with me when I go out but even if I have to take all three, it's not that overwhelming.
Good luck, love your choice of subjects!
I am from your neck of the woods but now live in Wash DC. I think you may know what images have been etched into my memory-----Hackensack NJ, Hoboken, Boston, Connecticut.. etc... I dont want to give away my project, but you get the jist of it. I'm sure Brooklyn is loaded full of dark landscapes....
Appreciate the tips. I'm passing on the 70-200....
