If this Nikon guy really speaks for Nikon's opinion of the D600, then they most certainly are not thinking of it as a replacement for the D300 as he describes them as different cameras targeted at different users. He mentions a significant distinction between the consumer body and the pro body.

They seem to be really thinking of the D600 as an FX upgrade for those used to the smaller consumer bodies such as D7000 and he even mentioned D90.

If they were really just trying to maximize D600 sales and did not have something else coming for the D300 user, they'd have nothing to lose by promoting the d600 to the widest user base possible. My interpretation - they're not encouraging D300 users to think of the D600 as a replacement because they have something better suited coming that is more of a replacement.
