Increase maximum focus distance?
Sep 21, 2012

Let's say you have a 50mm prime (fixed-focal length) lens, with a minimum focus distance of 1 foot. Let's say this lens has no optical focus, so it is fixed at focusing on subjects exactly 1 foot away, and thus the maximum focus distance is also 1 foot.

By adding extension tubes, you can reduce this minimum focus distance by a few inches and thus focus on closer subjects than before possible.

In fact, by adding your own focusing helicoid you could make this minimum focus distance variable, say +17-40mm, which would give you some decent flexibility in composition when you're that close to the subject.

Is there anything for going in the other direction?

For example, to increase the maximum focal distance to greater than 1 foot. Or, even better, to add an adjustable focus of +17-40mm to the maximum.
