Nikon D600/D800/D7000/D300 viewfinder AF coverage compared
Sep 21, 2012

There is some discussion going on regarding the rather limited focus point coverage area in the D600 viewfinder, compared to other Nikon cameras.

I have prepared this comparison to visualize the differences. Images are taken from the Nikon product manuals, I hope they represent the reality close enough.

As you can see, the D300 and D7000 being DX bodies have the best coverage, as expected.

D800 (same as D700) is an FX body and thus has much smaller coverage.

D600 as an FX body has the smallest coverage, or as Nikon calls it, "high-density".

It really seems that the autofocus module used in the D600 has the same size as the one used in the D7000, thus being substantially smaller in an FX sized viewfinder. To avoid confusion, it is not the same module, as it has much better sensitivity.
